In his 1938 children’s story “The Poisonous Mushroom,” Nazi party member Julius Streicher presents a mother’s lesson on Jewish people to her son. “Just as a single poisonous mushroom can kill a whole family, so a solitary Jew can destroy a whole village, a whole city, even an entire nation.”
Recently, Cheeto Mussolini’s eldest progeny, Donald Jr., aka “Fredo” Trump, echoed Streicher when he tweeted a picture of Skittles with the caption, “If I had a bowl of Skittles and I told you just three would kill you, would you take a handful? That’s our Syrian refugee problem.” The apple doesn’t fall far from the fascist tree in that family! Trump’s Hitlerian campaign began with the demonization of Mexican immigrants, and has continued with hurtful and incendiary commentary towards Muslims, refugees, female reporters, reporters with disabilities, fellow candidates, and anyone else who questions Trump’s self imagined brilliance.
Donald Trump wants to rule as an iron fisted strongman, create a quasi police state until all the undesirables of his fevered imagination are deported, and commission our military to commit war crimes and torture abroad. He is appealing to a certain, yes, deplorable segment of American society, running, sometimes explicitly, always implicitly, a white nationalist campaign, aimed at the sort of people who fear America’s growing diversity and dream of an imagined utopian past that wasn’t so wonderful for, well, women and minorities and anyone that isn’t a straight white man. As New York Times columnist Paul Krugman says, “Make America Great Again” is code for “Make America White Again,” and Trump is bringing the dark underbelly of American society back to prominence.
Trump’s candidacy has encouraged Klansmen like David Duke, alt-righters, and various other deplorables to crawl out from under the slime covered rocks they’ve been hiding below. They can be found on Facebook, where Jim Henson would be rolling in his grave if he knew that Kermit the Frog would become infamous for sipping tea and spouting racist right wing slogans, but that’s none of my business! Or on Twitter, where the wing nut eggs like to photoshop pictures of Politico reporter Julia Ioffe in concentration camp garb, because she happens to be Jewish and wrote a less than flattering profile of Melania Trump.
These miscreants who share Trump’s bigoted views are, yes, irredeemable, and could do us all a favor by taking their Confederate and Gadsen flags and kindly crawling back under the slime covered rocks from whence they came. The real enablers of Trump are those like Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, modern day “good Germans” who may personally reject bigotry but nonetheless are willing to live with Trump’s xenophobia, racism, and misogyny rather than stomach the horror of seeing Hillary Clinton, a slightly left of center Democrat, ever so slightly raise taxes on the rich and ever so slightly expand the social safety net for the poor. George W. Bush is rejecting Trump and his father is going a step further and voting for Clinton, because they are traditional Republicans, not racists, and they love their country more than the abomination that their political party has become under Trump.
